As documented on Foster City’s Wikipedia page, Foster City is a master-planned city in San Mateo County built in the 1960s on Brewer Island—marshland on the east edge of San Mateo along San Francisco Bay. Developer T. Jack Foster’s vision required one of the most dramatic civil engineering projects in California history: 2.5 million yards of material were excavated to create the city’s signature 218-acre lagoon, containing 425 million gallons of water and spanning 16.5 miles of drainage channels. The result was a city that has never experienced flooding, even during the devastating storms of 1982 that caused major drainage failures across the rest of San Mateo County.

Foster City incorporated in 1971 and has grown into a thriving community of over 33,000 residents—earning recognition from Forbes as one of America’s top towns to live well and consistently ranking as one of the safest cities in the United States, with an average of one murder per decade.
